New Deal for Carers: Revision of the Prime Minister's 1999 Strategy on Carers

1 min read Social Care
Young carers are being left isolated and offered little support from schools, GPs and councils, according to a report by the government's Health and Social Care Taskforce.

The report calls on all public sector organisations to do more to support carers, with recommendations including a family approach to care assessments by councils.

It says adult and children's services need to work better in partnership and for a performance indicator to be created to measure councils' effectiveness in ensuring young people are not pushed into excessive or inappropriate caring roles. Lack of support for young carers from health professions was also highlighted.

The taskforce is calling for training to raise awareness among GPs and hospital discharge teams about the need to support young carers. Stigmatisation of carers also needs to be addressed and promotional activity is being proposed for schools and colleges. Young carers also need to receive greater support in terms of their own emotional wellbeing, an area in which schools and child and adolescent mental health services should be taking the lead.
