Young carers miss out on support

Carers aged 18 to 24 are missing out on the support offered to children and adult carers, according to a recent report.

Service needs and delivery following the onset of caring amongst children and young adults was commissioned by the Commission for Rural Communities and published by the University of Nottingham.

Saul Becker, professor of social policy and social care at the university, oversaw the publication and says that new research in December, published in partnership with the Princess Royal Trust for Carers, will underline the points he has made in this report.

"Young adult carers are a very hidden group in society, and the evidence we will publish on 15 December will show that they are neglected and that adult carers don't really engage with them", said Becker.

"There is very little in the way of services for 18- to 24 year-olds compared to adult carers' services", he added.
