Researchers uncover "hidden group" of young carers

1 min read Social Care
Researchers say they have uncovered a "hidden group" of young carers who are not on the radar of service providers or policy makers.

Research conducted by Young Carers International at Nottingham University found that young adults at university who are also carers felt guilty and constantly worried about the people they care for. Seven of the 25 young adult carers interviewed for the report were attending universities across Britain, but none of them were aware of any specific carer support available for them there.

The researchers also found that young adult carers often opt out of higher education due to their caring commitments.

The report's co-author Fiona Becker said: "There are two key issues at stake here. The first is how to enable young carers with potential to get to university in the first place. The second is to ensure that those who are at university are able to do well in their studies and benefit from the wide range of experiences open to students."
