Group to push for more support for ‘hidden army’ of young carers

I am delighted that a new APPG for young carers is being constituted in parliament. Our aim is to raise the profile of the too often neglected hidden army of young carers, and lobby government for better recognition and support.

For me, this represents a sense of déjà vu. In 2001, as shadow spokesman for children’s issues, one of the first issues I became involved with was young carers. I attended one of the early Young Carers Festivals, and took part in a special Question Time event for MPs. We were shocked by the extent of the caring responsibilities taken on by children – in some cases still at primary school forced to grow up alarmingly quickly and prepared to make huge sacrifices throughout their childhood.

Almost 20 years on, many of the challenges and shortcomings have yet to be resolved.
