YOTs worried about care in custody

1 min read Youth Justice
Youth offending teams (YOTs) have highlighted concerns about the way custodial establishments protect young people in their care.

As part of a survey carried out by the Youth Justice Board (YJB), anumber of YOTs said they were not happy with the way custodial settingsmanaged issues around self-harm and attacks on fellow youngoffenders.

Meanwhile, the majority of secure establishments were reported as being"ineffective" at engaging YOTs in assisting with welfare issues andother concerns around young people.

A summary report concerning the findings of the survey, seen by CYP Now,did not however highlight any major concerns on the part of secureestablishments about YOTs.

Penelope Gibbs, director at the Prison Reform Trust, said she believesprocesses and management needs to be improved by both sides.

"I'm absolutely sure there is bad practice on behalf of the secureestate in liaising about managing risk of harm, but equally I would saythey are hampered by the fact that the information they get isincomplete," she said.
