
Justice minister Shailesh Vara told delegates at the annual YJB convention in Birmingham that the current system of self-assessments, peer reviews and formal inspections are successfully maintaining standards in the majority of cases.
But he added that there are a “small number of cases” where performance has not improved despite additional support from the Youth Justice Board.
He said that ministers have now approved a new system of “support and escalation” so YOTs requiring improvement can be identified earlier and additional support provided.
“The escalation process could ultimately result in the decision of the youth justice minister to issue a public intervention notice to a YOT," he said.
