As part of a Youth Justice Board (YJB) project to consult on futureneeds of the youth justice system, the body is reviewing the "predictivevalidity" of Asset - the basis of the Scaled Approach system launched byChildren's Secretary Ed Balls and Justice Secretary Jack Straw lastNovember
Asset is used to calculate which sentences are most appropriate foroffenders under the Youth Rehabilitation Order (YRO).
The intensity and duration of an offender's sentence - whether it willbe low, medium or intensive - will depend on their Asset score.
Tim Bateman, senior policy development officer at crime reductioncharity Nacro, said he welcomes the move but thinks the review couldhave taken place before the introduction of the Scaled Approach andYRO.
