The methods of assessment and intervention for young offenders could be set for a shake-up after the Youth Justice Board (YJB) announced a review of the process.
Explaining the review on its website, the YJB says: "With many youth offending teams (YOTs) based within their local authority's children's services department, it is essential that youth justice services, including assessments, interventions and referral processes, are aligned with the wider children's services agenda."
The main tool used for assessment, Asset, is nearly as old as the YJB itself, having been introduced in April 2000, two years after the formation of the board.
More recently, under the Scaled Approach, which came into effect at the end of November 2009, Asset has been used to calculate which sentences are most appropriate for offenders under the Youth Rehabilitation Order (YRO).
