News Insight: Youth Justice - The YJB and Frances Done: one year on

4 mins read Youth Justice
On 1 February, Frances Done will mark one year as chair of the Youth Justice Board. Ravi Chandiramani assesses her impact so far and the challenges that are lying in wait.

Frances Done's arrival 12 months ago as the figurehead of the Youth Justice Board (YJB) for England and Wales was greeted with general ambivalence in the sector. An accountant and auditor by background, she was pretty much unknown.

Since that time, she has visited three-quarters of all youth prisons, plus several youth offending teams (YOTs), to witness first hand the efforts to help troubled young people and prevent them reoffending.

"I can't believe the level of commitment and dedication. It is overwhelming sometimes," she says in an interview with CYP Now.

She wants to boost public understanding of YOTs by helping them promote their work and forge constructive links with the local press via the YJB's communications team.
