As Ellie Roy leaves the Youth Justice Board just before its 10th anniversary, Ravi Chandiramani reflects on a turbulent first decade.

Just as news leaked to CYP Now that Ellie Roy was being driven out of the Youth Justice Board (YJB) last week (CYP Now, 14-20 May), an invitation arrived in the post to mark the organisation's 10th anniversary. This ironic quirk of fate aside, Roy's departure as chief executive rounds off a turbulent first decade at the YJB, with youth crime now firmly in the public spotlight.

Roy has been told her marriage to the head of the prison service, Phil Wheatley, is a conflict of interest. In light of our revelation, the YJB put a statement on its website, in which Roy says "it is with great sadness I announce my departure and I am very proud of the improvements I have led during my four years", citing prevention programmes and safeguarding young people in custody.
