WORKPLACE: Who's in your Meetings? - Ken Facey, NSPCC child protection officer

1 min read
What exactly do you do? I work on the NSPCC's child protection helpline. The service is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to provide advice and support to anyone who is concerned about the welfare of a child.

Describe a typical day. The helpline is not just for adults - I speak to children, too. If a young person calls, I attempt to win their support by getting to their level and trying to understand what's going on from their perspective. Sometimes young people are quite surprised to get a warm response.

I am also responsible for making sure the process for referring people to social services is carried out succinctly and clearly.

We need to find out immediately whether a child is in need or at risk.

We make sure the needs of the child are heard and are put first.
