Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - Jim Carle, child health commissioner, NHS Ayrshire & Arran

1 min read
What exactly do you do? I am one of the first dedicated child health commissioners in Scotland. The post has many opportunities to influence and change child healthcare. I make sure all aspects of the childcare strategy are implemented and appropriate links with our local authority colleagues continue to be strengthened, delivering more integrated children's services, therefore improving outcomes for all children.

Describe a typical day. All aspects of what I do relate to the child health strategy, whether that means meeting with young people, politicians or colleagues at a national or local level, or anticipating the impact of the latest development on the way we provide children's services. No two days are the same.

What other agencies and who else within your organisation do you work with? I manage one person directly and influence the activities of a range of posts including researchers and health economists. I ultimately report to the associate director of health promotion and equalities.

How did you end up in this job? I have a background in social work and was previously children's service planning officer/better integration manager for a local authority.
