Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - Debbie Kelly, community firesafety practitioner, Lancashire Fire and Rescue

1 min read
What do you do? I work in partnership with emergency fire safety personnel and set up initiatives to educate the public about fire safety and prevention.

What was the highlight of the past week? I went to a local school togive a talk about fire safety and about the serious consequences of hoaxcalls. The highlight was giving the children a chance to try and put onthe equipment and uniform in as short a time as possible, just as firecrews do.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? Helping children andtheir families to be more aware of fire safety and to know thatinformation can make a real difference.

One of the things we do is ensure that families have thought about anescape plan in case of fire.

What is the hardest aspect of your job? Engaging with hard-to-reachgroups such as ethnic minority groups where there are languagedifferences can be really challenging. For example, we have a largePolish population in the Morecambe area. We do have specialistliterature, but it can still be tough.
