Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - Chris Ponsford, development director, What About The Children?

1 min read
What exactly do you do? What About The Children? (Watch?) is a voluntary organisation working to raise awareness and understanding of the emotional needs of babies and children under three years old and to support parents to meet these needs. I work part-time and my role is to co-ordinate our activities, deal with enquiries, keep up to date with research, write pamphlets and summaries and keep in touch with our members and people who can influence improvements for children.

Describe a typical day. Yesterday I contributed to the Early Childhood Forum response to a government consultation, discussed articles for our newsletter with the editor and spoke to the designer about our new logo.

I also made notes for our next pamphlet.

What other agencies, and who else within your own organisation, do you have to work with? I liaise with academics, practitioners and many like-minded organisations such as Parents As First Teachers and Young Minds.

I also work closely with the chairman and committee of Watch?

How did you end up in this job? I wanted to make a difference and be free to say what I really believe about children's needs. Previously I was a public servant, with my hands tied, in an authoritarian organisation.
