Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - Chris O'Hare, non-executivedirector and children's champion, Knowsley PCT

1 min read
What do you do? After Every Child Matters, all organisations are supposed to have someone who will champion children's issues at board level. I do this as a non-executive director at Knowsley Primary Care Trust for three days a month, though it tends to be more time consuming than this. Non-executive directors are laypeople who have a vote at board level in line with executive directors. There's not a set job description, it's what you make of it.

What was the highlight of the past week? Awaiting the second tranche ofresults from a survey we carried out with the leisure department with240 children. We interviewed them in places where they were likely to be- at youth facilities and through outreach workers while on thestreet.

Their main worry is bullying, so a group of local children's championsare banding together to explore the health aspect of this in Junealongside local lead members.

What's the most rewarding aspect of your job? Knowing that it's thebeginning of something important. I've been a non-executive director fornine years and before Every Child Matters we almost always discussedadult problems.
