Workplace: Who's in your meetings? - Caroline Renwick, programme manager, YWCA Cumbria Young Women's Project, Carlisle

1 min read
What exactly do you do? We work with young women to enable them to challenge and overcome discrimination and disadvantage and to develop the skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to make informed choices and take control of their lives. I'm responsible for developing strategies and programmes of work to achieve this aim in response to the needs of young women in the Carlisle area.

Describe a typical day. I could be facilitating a session of our Access 2 Opportunities personal and social development programme, meeting with a partner organisation, running an activity or issue-based workshop, writing a funding application or doing one of a hundred other things. My typical week isn't confined to Monday to Friday, nine to five either.

What other agencies, and who else within your own organisation, do you work with? I work with a number of local agencies including Connexions Cumbria, Sure Start and the Teenage Pregnancy Unit. We also work with smaller community-based organisations.

How did you end up in the job? I started as a trainee on YouthLink Scotland's Route 98 project, a five-year work-based programme, which was great as it meant I was earning while studying and gaining practical experience.
