Workplace: Ask the expert - What's your problem?

2 mins read
Raising morale among young people and staff; deciding when and when not to offer support; and how to stamp out the selling of stolen goods. Tracie Trimmer-Platman has the answers.

Q: I work in a small club three evenings a week but we've found it really difficult to motivate the groups into doing anything lately. All they want to do is sit around. We all got really down about it and some of my colleagues have even resigned. What can we do to get these young people motivated?

It is difficult, particularly if the staff morale is low and it is showing. It's a cliche but the best motivation comes from young people themselves. Have you encouraged conversations with them about why they come to the club, what they get out of it and what they would like to change? Often discussion lights the odd flame, which can then be developed into new areas of work, activities and opportunities.
