Q: I was shocked to find that two of our younger members care for their mother. They give her medication, bath her and do all the things that a nurse might do. They are only seven- and nine-years-old. Is this right?

Whether it is right for children and young people to have to look after relatives is open to debate, but the reality is that a considerable number do care for family members on a daily basis. The 2001 census estimated that there were 175,000 young carers under 18 in the UK, but many professionals believe the real number is far higher.
