Workplace: Ask the expert - What's your problem?

2 mins read Youth Work
Getting young people involved in centre finances; keeping looked-after children in touch with siblings; and nude models in community centres. Tracie Trimmer-Platman has the answers.

Q: We are a large youth club in Essex and have a diverse, proactive membership. The recent MPs' expenses fiasco has led to anger in the group about the misuse of public funds. I would like to get them involved in the centre's finances but my colleagues are not in favour.

It's not surprising the young people are angry - the whole country has been totally absorbed by the debate. The issues are relatively plain to see and it doesn't require a degree in politics to know that, in many cases, what's gone on is unacceptable. On the other hand, it could be a positive learning experience for young people and might encourage them to be more critical in their scrutiny of our political classes.
