Q: I am worried about a group of girls who come to our club. They claim to be a gang and when you talk to them they tell you some terrible stories about what they get up to. My colleagues tell me that it is all exaggerated but I am not so sure. Can girl gangs be as hard as boy gangs?
A: Girl gangs may be far less prevalent than male ones but they do exist and can be just as antisocial. We often assume that girls and young women are unlikely to be violent, aggressive or threatening because of the social, religious and familial demands that we place on them. Consequently, there have always been different ways of working with delinquent young women to those for young men who are antisocial.
