Working in the Midlands: NDNA and councils in private nurseryplans

Five local authorities in the Midlands have joined forces with the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) to ensure private nursery providers are involved in the creation of children's centres.

Walsall, Birmingham, Solihull, Herefordshire and Sandwell will all betaking part in the project, and have already held a number ofawareness-raising sessions with private-sector childcare providers.

A series of working groups has also been set up by the association. Onegroup, on workforce development, will see Sandwell Borough Councilworking with Shropshire and Worcestershire councils to devise an actionplan that will eventually be circulated to all 150 Englishauthorities.

Patricia Jackson, NDNA's head of regional development, said the groupwould look at issues around recruitment and retention. It would alsoaddress how skilled staff across different sectors could shareexpertise.
