Tim Loughton MP, the shadow children's minister, formally launched theSocial Work Commission at the National Children and Adult ServicesConference in Brighton last week (Children Now, 27 September-3October).
He said the party was setting up the commission to identify ways of"making sure social workers are seen as part of the solution, not partof the problem". Lord Laming, who chaired the inquiry into the death ofVictoria Climbie, and Butler-Sloss, a former president of the familydivision at the High Court, will be non-partisan patrons of thecommission advising its work and defining its terms of reference.
Loughton is currently putting together a team of children's and socialcare professionals to carry out the commission's investigation. A personwith experience of the care system will also be included.
