Social Care News: Social work - Tories to examine state of thesector

A commission into the state of social work is soon to be announced by the Conservatives.

Tim Loughton MP, the shadow children's minister, told a conference lastweek that the commission will include high-level representatives fromthe sector. He said social workers were underpaid and undervalued andthat it made economic sense to invest more in the profession. But hewarned: "We also need to make them more accountable, so people willtrust them more."

He added: "Properly trained child social workers must become pushyparents to looked-after children - they must stand up for the bestinterests of that child at all times, challenge mediocrity and providemotivation for these children to succeed. It is a false economy not toprovide this level of support. Unless we do we are storing up long-termcrime problems."
