
Today (12 March), Lord Laming publishes his report on the progress made since his inquiry into the death of Victoria Climbie nine years ago. As CYP Now went to press it was expected to say that, while the current system provides a good framework, more checks are needed on councils that fail to meet basic standards.
The storm over the Baby P case in November has left children's social work in particular reeling. Councils have cited difficulties finding qualified workers, with increasing numbers of short-term agency staff on their books. Many experienced social workers, already sapped by heavy caseloads and low morale, are said to have quit.
