Workforce: Professional bodies set to reorganise

The Confederation of Children's Services Managers (Confed) and the Association of Directors of Social Services (ADSS) will be turned into three new organisations in accordance with the Government's reforms of children's services, it was announced last week.

The ADSS and Confed have reached agreement "in principle" to set up theAssociation of Directors of Children's Services, consisting of directorsof children's services and other children's services leaders in England;the Association of Directors of Adult Services, consisting of directorsof adult services in England; and ADSS Cymru for directors of socialservices in Wales.

The changes will come into effect in January 2007. Anne Williams,currently vice-president of ADSS, will become president of the adultservices association. Elections will be held for president of the othertwo organisations. Arrangements for directors in Northern Ireland aresubject to "further dialogue".

Chris Waterman, Confed's executive director, said: "Directors ofchildren's services have replaced directors of education and directorsof social services for children.
