Youth workers could be expected to take on the position of lead professional from next April. Emily Rogers finds out what the role involves.

The former youth worker then calls a meeting of all the professionals who can help the young person and, collectively, they put together a support package. Lloyd co-ordinates this support plan, holding review meetings to check that tasks have been completed and whether new issues have arisen.

Integrated working

Lloyd has been carrying out this role, known as a "lead professional", for the past year as part of a trial of a new way of joint working to be rolled out across England from next April. Under proposals outlined in the Youth Matters green paper, the Government plans to put the role of lead professional at the heart of a new system of integrated working between agencies. Part of the thinking is to end what Tony Blair describes as "the farce of half a dozen agencies all spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on problem families".
