The best way to involve parents in extended school services is through informal discussions and the use of non-school settings, research into the initiative reports.

A study by the Family and Parenting Institute looked at how family support services such as parenting courses offered through the extended school programme were being run in 16 primary, secondary and special schools.

It found the schools that most successfully engaged with and attracted parents to sign up were those that realised "some parents have had negative experiences of school themselves". They encouraged more informal techniques such as using non-teaching staff to promote services, sometimes through discussions outside the school gates. Another successful technique was to use settings outside of school such as cafes and libraries.
