Toddlers at Sure Start children's centres are less likely to be given fruit or vegetables at snack time than other settings, according to research by organic food company Organix and campaign group The Soil Association.

The report, Georgie, Porgie, Pudding and Pie: Exposing the Truth about Nursery Food, is based on interviews with 1,772 parents and 487 nursery employees.

It found that only 40 per cent of nursery workers in Sure Start children's centres said they served fruit or vegetables at snack time compared with 75 per cent in voluntary-run settings. Only 12.5 per cent of state-maintained nursery workers said oily fish is served regularly.

But Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of the National Day Nurseries Association, said: "Many have a policy that fruit is served at snack times rather than biscuits."
