Health
Almost one in five adults from low-income families has gone hungry or skipped a meal in the past year because food is too expensive, according to research commissioned by children's charity NCH and the high-street bank Barclays.

A similar proportion of adults reported having gone without food so that another family member could eat. More than half of disadvantaged families also described themselves as struggling to afford enough food.

Moreover, nearly one in eight of the population has gone hungry or skipped meals because of rising food costs.

Tim Nichols, press and parliamentary liaison officer for the Child Poverty Action Group, said: "Times are getting harder for Britain's 3.9 million children below the poverty line. The moral imperative for the government to keep its promise to halve child poverty by 2010 is greater than ever."
