Nursery food is "too healthy" for toddlers, according to recent research.

With childcare professionals facing conflicting advice and a lack of official guidelines, Sue Learner asks the experts what they would recommend.

The majority of nurseries are confused or misinformed about what counts as healthy eating for children under the age of five, according to Neil Leitch, campaign director of Feeding Young Imaginations at the Pre-School Learning Alliance.

Due to the government's effective five-a-day campaign, many believe that a healthy diet for a child under five should primarily be lots of fruit and vegetables. So it is not surprising that nursery staff were shocked when they were accused in a recent study of giving children too much fruit and vegetables and not enough fatty foods (CYP Now, 9-15 April).
