Teenagers need to eat a balanced diet to stay active and healthy. Claire French examines what types of food they should eat and discusses ways to encourage reluctant teenagers to give up fatty foods and try other options rich in nutrients.

Q: Why is good food important for young people?

Remember how busy you were as a teenager? A balanced diet gives young people the fuel they need. Getting the right mix of energy and nutrients is essential to help them grow and learn, enabling them to balance their school workload and their hectic social lives.

Eating regular meals and healthy snacks is particularly important for teenagers. Going without breakfast, for example, will often mean they feel hungry during the morning - which can affect their concentration. A piece of toast or bowl of cereal accompanied by a glass of fruit juice in the morning is quick to prepare. Many schools run breakfast clubs for pupils who don't eat breakfast before leaving home.
