Work Wise: Jargon Buster

Have you sat through an entire meeting and wondered what your colleagues are rambling on about? Use our handy jargon guide to find out what they mean.

PARAPROFESSIONALS

Where you might hear it: In any sector, but most frequently in an educational setting.

What does it mean: Paraprofessionals are auxiliaries, or trained employees, who assist professionals in their work. In an educational context the term refers to teaching assistants, learning support assistants and classroom assistants. Paraprofessionals play a vital role in supporting teachers and educating children with special needs. They help to make schools more inclusive by assisting children who would otherwise be unable to keep up with their work.

How to use it: Organise a training day so that you and your colleagues can learn about how paraprofessionals are fundamental to inclusion policies. Ensure all paraprofessionals at your school have a clear job description.
