Weekend working: The Open Weekend

The Open Weekend on 10 and 11 July was supposed to be a chance for youth services to show off Friday and Saturday night activities. But, as Tom de Castella discovers, some organisations weren't consulted and others lacked the budget to take part.

The government was so proud of its Open Weekend initiative that it took out a full-page advertisement in The Sun to promote the event. "I'd be dead or in jail without a youth club," read the headline on the advert. The premise for the scheme is that on one given Friday and Saturday of the year - 10 and 11 July as it turned out - youth activities would be on offer right across the country. But the experience for the youth service heads and voluntary sector leaders Youth Work Now spoke to suggests that implementation of the initiative was patchy and in some areas non-existent.
