Weekend activities need structure, says youth chief

The head of a leading youth work charity has warned against providing activities designed to "hoover young people off the streets" on Friday and Saturday nights.

It follows a survey by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, seen exclusively by CYP Now, which reveals that 60 per cent of professionals think youth work activities should be designed to "keep young people off the streets" at the weekends. Less than 10 per cent think the activities should be structured and have accredited outcomes.

But Simon Antrobus, chief executive of Clubs for Young People, said projects need to do more than just keep young people occupied: "This shouldn't just be about hoovering young people off the streets. There needs to be real thought about what we do with them while they're with projects."
