Opinion: From the Top - There is a place for structure at weekends

1 min read Youth Work
The recent and renewed interest in providing places to go and activities for young people on a Friday and Saturday night is a welcome one.

It has helpfully reopened the debate about appropriate provision for young people, structured activities and outcomes. The government is right to challenge the sector to meet young people's needs. There should be no excuses for not providing for young people at the weekend, as this is when they have free time.

The voluntary sector does this well and, if you get it right, young people will grab the opportunities with both hands. But if you use underfunded and unwelcoming old buildings and offer uninspiring and inappropriate activities, you will fail. It is not as simple as opening the doors.

There has been much talk about Friday and Saturday night provision for young people being something less structured than other nights of the week. I accept that for young people that may be the initial attraction. But there is a risk that Friday and Saturday night club provision can lack form and purpose. Every club worker has to ask whether the club is not only attractive but also effective for its wider purpose.
