
The debate about youth club opening hours was seemingly turned on its head this month, when a survey of almost 2,000 young people revealed Friday and Saturday night provision was not a priority for them.
Despite previous government research to the contrary, the sample from Wiltshire suggests the young people prefer access during weekday evenings. This has prompted calls for a rethink about what young people really want from youth services, and when.
Mike Smith, director of Birmingham Federation of Clubs for Young People, says that regardless of research, young people want things to do on the weekend. "Young people do not hibernate at weekends so I am convinced they do need things to do and those things need to be positive and enjoyable," he says.
