Waste Works, Manchester

1 min read Education Extra-curricular
What is it? Waste Works is The Co-operative Group's recycling education centre, based at its office waste recycling centre in Manchester. This is where paper from its nearby head office is converted into toilet and kitchen paper, which is then sold in its retail outlets.

How does it involve children? The centre runs a series of projects aimed at involving school children in recycling, such as its Paper Trail workshop. This was launched two years ago and looks at how waste paper is recycled. All Waste Works projects are free and have been developed to run alongside the National Curriculum for Key Stage 2 pupils, covering science, geography, citizenship, design and technology.

What's new at the centre? It has just launched another project called Closing the Loop, which is marketed as an advanced workshop for children who already know a little about recycling. This looks in more detail at the recycling process of a range of materials, including plastics, during a two-hour workshop.
