Wales: UK's first national play strategy aims to turn vision into reality

The Welsh Assembly will today (15 February) launch the first national play strategy in the UK. The document sets out a raft of measures designed to turn the vision of Wales's national play policy into reality.

These include ensuring all government policies are examined for theirimpact on children's play and national guidance on quality play. Theassembly also pledges to ensure that statutory guidance on the ChildrenAct 2004 will include "a duty to co-operate in addressing the play needsof local children and young people".

In March 2007 the assembly will publish guidance on what makes a qualityplay opportunity and it will start working with play practitioners andchildren this year to develop standards for a wide variety ofprovision.

It will involve children and young people in reviewing planning guidanceon open space, play and recreation. The strategy also looks at play inschools and ways to boost the playwork profession.
