Speaking at Children's Now's Prioritising Play conference last week,Lammy said a national strategy was not the way forward. "I know many ofyou have been lobbying for a national play strategy. My own view is thatit is not the direction of travel for the Government," he tolddelegates.
"The policy direction is against centralised national impositions andmuch more in terms of local context."
He went on to warn against becoming "preoccupied with a nationalstrategy that takes up time when actually the agenda is 'let's moveforward and make this stuff happen'".
But other UK countries will have national play strategies. Wales has ledthe way with a national play policy followed by a national strategy thatwill be launched in December.
