Analysis: Wales - Play plan goes for heavy impact

Wales last week beat England, Scotland and Northern Ireland to give the UK its first-ever national play strategy, the progress of which is sure to be keenly watched. Jo Stephenson looks at what the Welsh Assembly Government has in store for play.

When it comes to play, Wales is the confident child always ready tolearn a new game. While other UK countries watched shyly from the edgeof the playground, Wales forged ahead with the world's first nationalplay policy, published in October 2002.

This has been followed by an implementation plan - Play in Wales -launched by the Welsh Assembly Government last week (Children Now, 15-21February).

It's the first national play strategy in the UK and as such is beingclosely scrutinised by playworkers in all four nations.

Perhaps the most significant aspect is the pledge to introduce a duty onlocal authorities to address the play needs of local children and youngpeople into statutory guidance on the Children Act 2004.
