Youth services: Wales to develop national strategy

1 min read
The Welsh Assembly Government is to develop a national youth service strategy to outline how it fits in with wider reforms of young people's services.

Education minister Jane Davidson said the strategy will be developed in partnership with the youth sector, and will increase its contribution to the Extending Entitlement reform agenda.

A Welsh Assembly Government spokesman said details of the strategy are still being worked out. But it is expected to set out the role the youth service will play in the development of services for young people, what resources the service will need, as well as a staged implementation plan.

Rob Edwards, chair of the Principal Youth Officers' Group for Wales, and head of service in Flintshire, said: "This is about putting the meat on the bones, and firming up the position of youth work within Extending Entitlement.

"What excited me most was that there is a commitment to resourcing the service as well."

The Welsh Assembly Government said it would work with the youth service on the document, before opening it up to wider consultation in early 2007.
