Wales: Trial competition to be held in Welsh

Teenagers from two schools are to hold a mock court trial using the Welsh language for the first time.

The trial forms part of a national competition organised by theCitizenship Foundation and the Magistrates' Association.

The 14-year-olds from Ysgol Tryfan, Bangor and Ysgol Botwnnog, LleynPeninsula will compete in May. They will use carefully constructedwitness statements to prepare the prosecution and defence of a speciallywritten case. Students will take on the role of lawyers, witnesses,magistrates and court staff.

A spokeswoman for the Citizenship Foundation said: "The competitionoffers young people a hands-on introduction to the legal system."

The final will take place on 24 June in Manchester.
