A record 1,400 primary and secondary schools have signed up to the event run by the Hansard Society, an educational charity promoting parliamentary democracy. The Electoral Commission and Department for Education and Skills are also supporting the poll.
"It's not just about voting," said Fiona Booth, director of citizenship training at the Hansard Society. "Children will use ICT and other skills to design posters and campaign web sites, build ballot boxes and draw up manifestos. It also teaches them about democratic processes."
Results are due within a week after the general election, expected in May.
