Wales: Progress slow after child abuse inquiry

The Welsh children's commissioner is concerned that a landmark report into child abuse may have been put on the backburner.

Peter Clarke published the Clywch report in July last year (Children Now, 7-13 July 2004) following an investigation into one of the worst cases of child abuse in Welsh history. But a taskforce set up by the Welsh Assembly Government to implement his proposals has only met once since then.

Clarke's deputy, assistant children's commissioner Sara Reid, said: "We are broadly pleased with the response, but we do have some concerns that progress may have slowed somewhat." A spokeswoman for the Welsh Assembly said another taskforce meeting was planned and that a statement to the assembly would be made in March.
