Social Care News: Wales - Abuse report slow to take effect

The Welsh children's commissioner is concerned that some recommendations from a landmark report into child abuse have still not been implemented.

Peter Clarke published the Clywch report in July 2004. It investigatedclaims of sexual abuse by a school drama teacher and accused the nowdefunct Mid-Glamorgan local education authority of attempting to coverup abuse claims.

"It's taking a lot longer than originally anticipated," said aspokeswoman for his office. "But that's because we need to get consensusfrom different organisations."

Clarke recommended that four independent tribunals be established tohear allegations. But this is proving to be one of the slowestrecommendations to implement.

A Welsh Assembly Government spokesman said: "We have welcomed the activepart that the commissioner and his officers have played."
