Wales: Clarke won't back down over Clywch

The Welsh children's commissioner has said he stands by his inquiry report into the Clywch sex abuse scandal after two of the men criticised demanded an apology (News, 6-12 July).

Eddie Roberts, former director of education at Mid Glamorgan Council, and former personnel officer Graham Dunn deny the commissioner's conclusion that they initiated a deal that allowed drama teacher John Owen to resign after he was accused of abusing pupils at a school in Pontypridd.

A spokeswoman for commissioner Peter Clarke said he would not apologise and said any challenges should be made to the High Court.

Last week, former Bridgend Council leader Jeff Jones escaped a conviction for contempt of court after Clarke accused him of trying improperly to influence decisions in the inquiry by sending threatening letters. However, Mr Justice Jack at Cardiff Crown Court said he deplored the tenor of Jones' "ill-considered letter".
