
A group of young people have been given a chance to sample life at the heart of government this week, after the Treasury threw open its doors to encourage people from all backgrounds to consider a career in government. The Youth Outreach programme, run by the Treasury and youth charity London Youth, brought together 15 teenagers from diverse backgrounds to gain employability skills, experience of the working world and a unique perspective on life at the Treasury.
The national child sex abuse inquiry has been accused of covering up an allegation of indecent assault of a member of staff by a senior colleague. The BBC reports that an investigation was dropped after the alleged perpetrator resigned. The inquiry has denied receiving any complaint of sexual assault, and lawyers for the alleged perpetrator have said he categorically denies the allegations.
Children would be taught about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) history and the significance of figures such as the mathematician Alan Turing as part of the school curriculum under a Labour government, Jeremy Corbyn has said. The Guardian reports the Labour leader made the promise at an awards dinner, where he also said the state should apologise to gay men such as Turing who were prosecuted for sexual acts that are no longer criminal. ?
The British and French governments have been accused of breaching children's human rights as up to 50 young people were abandoned by authorities in Calais and forced into an industrial estate near the cleared refugee camp to sleep in makeshift conditions. The Guardian reports the teenagers were promised transport to a reception centre where they could be assessed for asylum or reunification with families in the UK but after an hour no bus arrived and police units pressed them into a side street in an industrial estate.?
A former adviser to Education Secretaries Nicky Morgan and Michael Gove has been recruited by the Children's Commissioner for England. Alice Miles, senior policy adviser to the Education Secretary and children's minister between 2012 and 2015 is joining the children's commissioner's team as director of strategy. She replaces Alex Burghart who has joined the Prime Minister's Office to lead on social justice at Number 10.
Only one in five requests made for information under Sarah's Law to West Yorkshire Police has been accepted in 12 months. The Huddersfield Examiner reports that latest figures available, disclosed following a Freedom of Information request to West Yorkshire Police, showed out of 54 applications made in 2014/15 just 11 resulted in disclosure. The Child Sex Offenders Disclosure scheme allows parents and others to ask police for details about individuals if they suspect they might harm children.
A father has criticised his 13-year-old daughter's school after she was sent home from school because of her hairstyle. The Sun reports that Darren Benson spent £140 on her new long bright white braids. He said that a Jamaican friend of his daughter Chenise has been allowed to remain at the school despite sporting a very similar hairdo.
