Wales: Play proposals to go before cabinet

1 min read
Wales is one step nearer to adopting a national strategy for play, which campaigners hope will catapult the issue to the heart of the political agenda.

The strategy will build on the national play policy drafted in 2002, which acknowledges that play is critical to all children's development.

It states: "Decision-making at all levels of government should include a consideration of the impact of those decisions on children's opportunities to play."

The recommendations of the Play Policy Implementation Group, which is made up of national play and children's organisations and Welsh Assembly representatives, are set to go before the cabinet sub-committee for children and young people on 1 November.

Children in Wales and Play Wales acted as consultants to the group and drafted the recommendations.

Play Wales director Mike Greenaway hoped a national strategy would make the aspirations of the play policy a reality.
