Wales: 'Inconsistent' Careers Wales has made progress

Youth Gateway, established in 2001 to help school-leavers, was praised for carrying out "very valuable work".

But the review stated: "There is cause for concern about the consistency of service offered between companies for pre-16 Youth Gateway services." Youth Gateway was set up as part of Careers Wales, the first all-age careers service in the UK.

Overall, Careers Wales is "towards the forefront of best practice", according to GCL Management Consultants, which conducted the review.

Youth Gateway is expanding more rapidly than any other part of the service.

European Social Fund grants, secured in 2001, have enabled the department to grow beyond its careers remit to offer more guidance for disengaged young people.
