CAREERS WALES: A gateway to work

Services for young people in Wales haven't had injections of money on the scale of Connexions in England. But, as Dipika Ghose discovers, careers advice and assistance is proving to be even more vital for Welsh teenagers.

Youth unemployment stands at 28.6 per cent, compared with an overall rate across Wales of 13.5 per cent. And according to the Anti-Poverty Network Cymru, one in three children in Wales lives in poverty, the highest rate in the UK. Teenage pregnancy is the highest in Europe, at 3.5 per cent. In some areas of Newport and Swansea, four out of five children live in poverty.

The decline of industry in the Valleys has led to increasing stagnation in terms of opportunities for young people. This is one reason why Wales is eligible for European Objective One funding, which comprises four strands of money, such as the European Social Fund, aimed at areas of greatest economic and social need.
